Liberalization of the telecommunications sector during the 1990s enabled a large and competitive industry to develop in Switzerland for fixed and mobile telephony as well as the internet.

Per capital investment in telecommunication equipment is the highest in the world. More than 70% of the population are hooked up to broadband internet, and Vaud’s towns provide free public access to the wireless internet via WiFi.


Several global providers operate in the canton, notably serving multinationals, the Canton of Vaud and international organisations.


The canton of Vaud has a backbone network of fibre optic cables stretching for more than 16,000km.
