Support for technological innovation

The Swiss authorities provide special support for enterprises developing activities in high-tech sectors. Various organisations have been established to promote the development of companies with high value added.  So the canton of Vaud has organisations in place to promote technical support and co-operation, notably with its universities. In addition, the canton of Vaud has set up several programmes of financial incentives for technical innovation.

CTI - Swiss Federal Innovation Promotion Agency

The CTI promotes research and development projects in conjunction with universities and companies. When a project is taken on, it can help provide co-finance covering up to 50% of the total cost. In theory, any technical college or university may be contacted to undertake an R&D project. The following schools in the canton of Vaud are especially active in R&D and more than ready to collaborate with the private sector :

  • The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL)
  • Vaud School of Business and Engineering (HEIG-VD)
  • The University of Lausanne (UNIL)
  • The Vaud University Hospital (CHUV)
Alliance - Industrial liaison programme linking enterprises and research institutions in western Switzerland


Alliance sets up contacts between enterprises seeking co-operation in R&D and the research institutions at all the universities in French-speaking Switzerland. Alliance helps enterprises to identify their needs, to translate them into actual projects and to find the ideal partners among the university labs. It targets all innovative companies, but particularly SMEs investing with partner universities in:

  • micro and nanotechnologies / engineering, systems
  • information and communications technology
  • biomedical technologies, life sciences
  • materials technologies and sciences

Alliance is also linked to a Europe-wide technological exchange platform (Enterprise Europe Network).

AIT – Vaud Association for the Promotion of Innovation and Technology & PLATINN Network /

The AIT is an association commissioned by the canton of Vaud. It has been set up to promote collaboration between manufacturing SMEs with the universities and the canton of Vaud; the intention is to permanently secure the position of Vaud as a centre of technology. Its activities focus on the following areas:

  • modernising production techniques and methods, and
  • identifying the skills required to develop and promote new products.

The AIT is closely linked with PLATINN Network, that assists SMEs in optimisation, innovation and co-operation projects throughout six French-speaking cantons (Vaud, Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel and Valais).

Venturelab - start-up training

Venturelab is an initiative run by the CTI innovation promotion agency. Its mission is to work closely with universities, institutes of technology and specialist colleges to offer free practical courses aimed at sensitising students and fostering individual start-up projects in high-tech fields. The overall objective is to promote company start-ups with high value added.
