Few regions in Europe have the same diversity and quality of medical services as those offered to residents of the canton of Vaud. Swiss medical skills enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide. The canton of Vaud boasts a dozen or so hospitals and a total of 4.6 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in the world.

Healthcare Network

A tightly knit network of regional hospitals and medical facilities ensures that every resident has access to fast, quality care, for both minor ailments and more serious cases. In the latter instance, patients can be transported in minutes by helicopter to the biggest hospital in the canton, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), which has one of the best names in Europe.

Numerous private clinics, which enjoy an excellent international reputation, are also located in the canton de Vaud, notably on the Riviera.  There are also a number of treatment and wellness centres in choice locations, notably including the spas at Lavey-les-Bains and Yverdon-les-Bains, which have been popular since Roman times.

Health and Accident Insurance

Compulsory health and accident insurance provides affordable access to quality health care. Make sure that you comply with the obligation to take out insurance with a Swiss health scheme, and insure all the members of your family against accidents as well (see "Compulsory insurance").


Pharmacies supply medication both with and without prescription and can also provide basic health advice. In case of emergency outside of normal opening hours, a late pharmacy remains open until 9 or 11 pm . Here is a list of emergency pharmacies (available in several languages. Enter the canton (VD) and/or your place of residence). If no pharmacy is available, you should contact the nearest hospital or the medical facility.

Memorise these numbers and inform the other members of your family.

  • When you go to a doctor or hospital, take your residence permit and a copy of your health insurance certificate to present at reception.
