Payerne

Located in north of the Canton of Vaud, the region of Payerne enjoys the pastoral atmosphere of Lake Neuchâtel. Famous for its medieval village and majestic abbey church, the town also offers cultural events, natural assets, leisure activities, and a military airfield.

A dream stay in the Vaud region

A historic and cultural town, Payerne developed in the heart of the fertile Broye Valley, in step with Switzerland’s largest Romanesque abbey church. Built in the 11th century by monks from Cluny, who were undoubtedly charmed by the serenity of the location, the abbey church is remarkably well preserved today and is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. Visitors can explore it via an interactive tour, discover its temporary exhibitions or attend one of the many concerts that are regularly organised there.

Payerne also charms visitors with its wealth of leisure activities and traditions. Its carnival, Les Brandons, is one of the oldest in Switzerland, while the Payerneland leisure centre delights young and old alike. The Payerne aerodrome and its military museum are a must-see for aviation enthusiasts. Food lovers will appreciate the diversity of local products, including the famous Payerne cake.

On the outskirts of the town, the Broye region of Vaud reveals its generous and unspoilt natural environment. Bordered by Lake Neuchâtel, it offers beautiful beaches, charming ports and numerous water sports opportunities. Nature lovers can also discover the Grande Cariçaie, Switzerland’s largest lakeside marshland and a true paradise for flora and fauna.
