Payerne

Located in north of the Canton of Vaud, the region of Payerne enjoys the pastoral atmosphere of Lake Neuchâtel. Famous for its medieval village and majestic abbey church, the town also offers cultural events, natural assets, leisure activities, and a military airfield.

A dream stay in the Vaud region

A historic and cultural town, Payerne developed in the heart of the fertile Broye Valley, thanks to Switzerland’s largest abbey church. Built in the 11th century by Cluny monks, who were undoubtedly attracted by the tranquillity of the site, the abbey church is perfectly preserved and constitutes a masterpiece of Romanesque art. Visitors can explore it with an interactive tour, discover its painting exhibitions or attend one of the regularly organised concerts there.

Payerne is also reputed for its carnival, called the Brandons, one of the oldest in Switzerland, the Payerneland entertainment centre, the water sports that can be practiced on Lake Neuchâtel, and its proximity to the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve, Switzerland’s largest lake marsh. Foodies will be delighted by the vast variety of local products while aviation fans will be more drawn to the Payerne airfield and its military museum.
