Avenches and its region
Avenches
Avenches is Roman, picturesque, friendly, gourmet, and equestrian all at once. Its archaeological site, medieval alleys, the proximity to the sandy beaches of Lake Morat and the hillsides of Vully make it a destination offering a variety of attractions.
A dream stay in the Vaud region
Perched on top of a hill, the former capital of Roman Helvetia, Avenches – or Aventicum – watches over the vestiges of its glorious past, three quarters of which still lie dormant under the earth. The impressive, large-size amphitheatre at the entrance of the village remains the best-preserved one in the country. The famous ancient arenas are dominated by a square tower that plays home to the cultural treasures of the Roman Museum. Avenches, a proud ambassador of Vaudois-style art of living, offers multiple events focusing on conviviality and gourmet moments.
Although its archaeological site ranks among the most important ones in Switzerland, today’s village is still full of charm. Its key features are a covered shopping promenade, irregular staircases, a 13th century castle, medieval monuments, and historic buildings. Because of this rich heritage, Avenches is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful villages. Thanks to the presence of the Swiss National Stud Farm and the National Equestrian Institute (IENA), Avenches is also the capital of the horse.
Aventicum may have retreated into silence, but Avenches remains very much alive and a wonderfully preserved architectural jewel.
