The castle of Grandson is Switzerland’s second-largest castle.

Overlooking Lake Neuchâtel, Grandson Castle is a medieval fortress with a thousand years of history, which found itself at the heart of European history during the Burgundy Wars between Charles the Bold and the Confederates.

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, Grandson Castle played a central role in the Burgundy Wars and the Battle of Grandson (1476). Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, was defeated by the Confederates and left behind a prestigious booty, including numerous pieces of artillery.

Currently undergoing renovation, Grandson Castle – a site of national importance – will house a new museum in 2026. The opening will coincide with the commemorations of the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Grandson.

The permanent exhibition ‘Grandson: 1,000 Years of History’ offers a fresh perspective on Grandson Castle. This immersive journey, spread across three floors and some fifteen different spaces, goes beyond a simple chronological narrative to establish a dialogue between different eras and perspectives.

Visitors journey through the centuries, exploring the legacy of the powerful de Grandson family, the architectural evolution of the fortress and the succession of its owners. The exhibition highlights the Battle of 1476, a pivotal moment in the Burgundian Wars, by juxtaposing the local context with European issues, and historical sources with contemporary interpretations.

For children aged 2 to 8, a parallel sensory trail transforms these stories into a fun adventure, creating intuitive links with the history.

Fully restored, the castle provides a setting where the past resonates with the present-day questions. Beyond the castle walls, this exhibition offers an experience in which each story opens up a contemporary reflection.
