Sentier des Jeurs

Sentier des Jeurs

An educational forest walk in Château-d’Oex to discover the Sapin des Jeurs, a centuries-old fir tree in the Pays-d’Enhaut.

The Sentier des Jeurs is an easy forest walk full of discoveries, ideal for a family outing in Château-d’Oex. Along the route, panels and pictograms guide walkers through the main stages in the life of a tree: from seed to young plant, from roots to trunk, all the way to the essential role played by deadwood in the forest.

The highlight of the itinerary is the majestic Sapin des Jeurs. This white fir probably started growing around 1775 and now stands nearly 45 metres tall. Its diameter at breast height is 1.42 metres, which equals a circumference of 4.45 metres. Although it is already around 250 years old, it could live for several more centuries if conditions remain favourable.

Throughout the walk, the trail raises awareness of forest biodiversity in the Pays-d’Enhaut. Visitors learn how seeds travel on the wind, why roots are vital, how young trees struggle to grow, and why deadwood is home to so many species.

With a walking time of around one hour and a moderate elevation gain, this educational trail offers a lovely immersion in nature, combining observation, learning and the simple pleasure of walking peacefully beneath the fir trees.
